As the number of specialized dermal fillers continues to expand, the number of questions about the popular cosmetic injections also increases. Our expert injectors who specialize in dermal fillers at our Guelph, ON, practice ensure that they answer all their patients’ questions so they feel confident about their procedures.
With that in mind, we’re focusing this blog post on 5 of the filler questions we hear most often.
It’s important to know that the most critical question about fillers is who’s injecting them. There’s a tendency to consider cosmetic injections simple procedures that don’t require as much skill as other treatments. That is not the case. Injectors need to have a comprehensive understanding of facial anatomy and how much filler is needed to produce the desired results without looking unnatural.
Here are 5 other key questions about fillers:
Fillers and BOTOX (along with Dysport® and XEOMIN®) are anti-wrinkle treatments, but they work in very different ways. Dermal fillers are smooth gels that minimize wrinkles and lines by restoring volume in areas such as the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and under the eyes. They can also be used to contour specific areas of the face. BOTOX and similar products target “dynamic” wrinkles caused by the movement of facial muscles when we squint, smile, frown, or change our expressions in other ways. BOTOX relaxes these muscles, resulting in smoother skin.
The duration of fillers varies depending on the product that’s used. In some cases, results last between 6 and 9 months. But a newer generation of fillers, such as JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA and RADIESSE®, may last as long as 2 years after treatment. Scheduling touch-up treatments are a good way to extend the results of filler injections.
The popularity of fillers is due, in part, to their versatility. Even though many people think of fillers as anti-wrinkle treatments, fillers can be used to improve your appearance in several ways. For example, patients get lip injections at our Guelph med spa to augment naturally thin lips. Additionally, facial contouring with fillers is an excellent option for creating balance among different facial features.
Absolutely. Because fillers and BOTOX treat different types of wrinkles, we often combine them during a single appointment. This combination allows us to produce comprehensive results that wouldn’t be possible with either of the treatments alone. Fillers are also an essential element of our 5-Dimension Skin Plan™, an approach to facial rejuvenation developed by Royal College-certified dermatologist Dr. Dusan Sajic. Microneedling, laser skin treatments, and chemical peels may all be combined with fillers in a customized treatment plan.
Most dermal fillers are formulated with an active ingredient called hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a molecule found naturally in the body that helps hydrate and plump the skin. JUVÉDERM and Restylane® products are the most popular HA fillers. Bio stimulators, such as Sculptra® Aesthetic and RADIESSE, are another category of fillers. In addition to adding volume, these products stimulate the production of collagen to help smooth away wrinkles.
