Collagen helps keep the skin smooth and youthful-looking, and stimulating collagen production is an essential part of many of the skin rejuvenation treatments offered at deRMA Skin Institute. Microneedling—which is also called collagen-induction therapy—is an optimal treatment for promoting new collagen growth and is used to minimize acne scars, stretch marks, and fine lines. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dusan Sajic oversees microneedling at our Guelph and Burlington clinic for patients from throughout Southwestern Ontario.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling performed in a medical setting is much different than at-home microneedling using derma rollers. Dr. Sajic uses the microneedling device to create micro-injuries, stimulating the skin’s self-repair process. This response to the tiny punctures includes increasing the production of collagen. Because the punctures are so small, there is little to no downtime as the wounds heal within hours.
A topical numbing cream applied 30 minutes before the treatment ensures that patients experience little discomfort during the procedure.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Microneedling?
Just about anyone can benefit from microneedling. Microneedling can treat a number of skin concerns, including:
- Signs of aging
- Acne scars
- Stretch marks
- Melasma
- Vitiligo
Dr. Sajic enhances the results using serums containing nourishing ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, and hyaluronic acid, which are able to penetrate the skin’s surface after microneedling more efficiently. At deRMA Skin Institute, we also offer PRP Microneedling.
Important: The procedure is usually not advised for pregnant and lactating women, people with blood diseases, and perceived tumours.
What Are The Benefits Of Microneedling?
Among the reasons that microneedling is so popular with our patients are:
- Short recovery period
- No post-treatment pain relief required (even for patients with low pain tolerance)
- Long-lasting results
You can talk to Dr. Sajic about microneedling treatment alternatives, such as laser skin rejuvenation or chemical peels that address similar conditions to see which is best for your needs.
How Many Treatment Sessions Are Needed?
Microneedling patients typically require 3 to 4 sessions performed every month to get the optimal results. It can take a few more treatments for patients with acne scars. Dr. Sajic personalizes the treatment sessions for patients according to their needs. Even though some patients perform microneedling at home, we recommend having the treatment at our clinic to avoid the risk of complications or infection.
With home-use microneedling devices, needles are usually up to 0.5 millimetres. Needles used by medical professionals range from 0.5 millimetres to 2.5 millimetres, providing a better response.
What Is Recovery Like After Microneedling?
Skin typically appears pinkish after a microneedling treatment, and patients should avoid applying makeup to let the skin recuperate and rest from the process. It is essential to eat foods that promote collagen production, such as bananas and oranges. Also, apply moisturizers and sunscreen after the procedure.
