Skin discolouration is one of the most common reasons people seek treatments at deRMA Skin Institute. Sun damage is primarily responsible for age spots that mar otherwise radiant, evenly toned skin. Our skincare specialists offer a range of safe and effective treatments for hyperpigmentation at our Guelph, Ontario, clinic.

Who Can Benefit From Hyperpigmentation Treatments?
When excess melanin—the brown pigment responsible for skin colour—accumulates in specific areas, brown spots form. These spots most often show up on the face, arms, and décolletage, essentially areas often exposed to the sun. Anyone who wants to minimize brown spots—also called liver spots, freckles, or sunspots—is a good candidate for hyperpigmentation treatment.
Not all hyperpigmentation falls in the category of brown spots. Women often develop melasma, splotches of discolouration associated with hormonal changes. It’s often called the “pregnancy mask” because the condition often develops when a woman is pregnant.
How Is Hyperpigmentation Treated?
We customize hyperpigmentation treatments based on the patient’s health history, lifestyle, and other specific factors that may have resulted in the development of brown spots.
We may recommend one of the following treatment options:
Chemical Peels
Peels range from light to medium to deep and can treat various skin conditions, including hyperpigmentation and brown spots. Superficial peels require virtually no downtime but may not be strong enough to fade discolouration. More intense peels are also used to treat hyperpigmentation but may require a couple of days of recuperation.
Chemical peels use ingredients such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and work by removing the skin’s top layers. Healthy skin forms in its place, resulting in the reduced appearance of dark spots because the peels also remove melanin. Peels offered at deRMA Skin Institute include:
Our lead dermatologist, Dr. Dusan Sajic, recommends specific peels for patients of different skin tones and those with sensitive skin.
Erbium Pixel™ Laser
As one of the leading authorities in medical laser technology used to reverse signs of aging in Guelph, Dr. Sajic often recommends treating hyperpigmentation with Erbium Pixel laser skin resurfacing. The laser targets brown spots both on the skin’s surface and below, stimulating the production of new collagen and replacing discoloured skin with smoother, more evenly pigmented skin.
