Microneedling on its own restores your skin’s volume and firmness and minimizes early signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Morpheus8® RF Microneedling and SYLFIRM X RF Microneedling take traditional microneedling at our Guelph and Burlington practice to the next level by combining it with radiofrequency energy, producing transformative results with little to no downtime.
What Is RF Microneedling?
Starting at about age 30, the skin’s production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid slows down. Because these components are primarily responsible for giving skin its youthful radiance, suppleness, strength, and elasticity, most people begin to notice the tell-tale signs of aging—degradation, deflation, and descent—accelerating after they turn 30.
RF microneedling uses a handheld device covered in micro-needles to penetrate the skin and release radiofrequency (RF) energy into the deeper layers of the skin to initiate your body’s natural healing function. As your skin heals, your body generates new collagen and elastin, forming smoother, softer, more radiant skin.

Morpheus8 RF Microneedling
We use a device called Morpheus8 to strengthen and rejuvenate your skin by delivering precision-controlled radiofrequency (RF) energy to the desired depth, ensuring optimal results with minimal downtime compared to similar devices. An array of 24 gold-plated micro-pins at the tip of the handheld applicator penetrate the skin to a pre-set depth of 2, 3, or 4 millimetres, dispersing RF energy at the same time. Combining microneedling’s controlled micro-injuries with thermal, RF energy stimulates the production of new collagen, creating smoother, tighter skin than is possible with only microneedling.
SYLFIRM X RF Microneedling
At deRMA Skin Institute, we also offer SYLFIRM X RF microneedling, a skin rejuvenation system designed to react to abnormal blood vessels and tissue in the skin to treat hyperpigmentation and vascular lesions as well as treat fine lines and wrinkles, lax, sagging skin, active acne, acne scarring, rosacea, stretchmarks, and improve skin’s appearance.
The SYLFIRM X device uses microneedles with electrodes designed to penetrate the skin at a precise depth to deliver repeated pulse RF energy to treat specific skin concerns and improve skin’s appearance with minimal downtime and discomfort.
Other RF microneedling devices include Vivace®, Potenza™, Infini™ RF, Fractora™ RF, and Secret™ RF.
What Areas Can You Treat With RF Microneedling?
RF microneedling is a multipurpose treatment that rebuilds and reinforces the structure of your skin on the face and body. The most frequently treated areas include the midface, lower face, neck, eyebrows, and skin around the eyes. It can be used on any area to treat:
- Lax skin
- Acne scarring
- Lines, wrinkles, and creases
- Thin, crepey skin
- Moderately sagging brow
- Sagging eyelids
In addition to the face, RF microneedling can be used on areas such as the abdomen for nonsurgical skin tightening.
What Happens During RF Microneedling?
We apply a topical cream to numb the treatment area before beginning the procedure. In some cases, we may also use an injectable local anesthetic. After waiting about 25 to 40 minutes for the numbing agents to work, a provider uses the handheld device to deliver the treatment in a grid pattern. The device emits beeping noises during the procedure.
What Is Recovery Like After RF Microneedling?
Because RF microneedling is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure, there is little downtime associated with your treatment. Most patients find they are comfortable returning to work the day after the procedure. You may experience mild, pinpoint bleeding immediately following the treatment, which should resolve within a few minutes. Your skin may look and feel as if you have had a sunburn for up to 7 days. Swelling rarely occurs and usually only lasts a few days.
Protecting your skin from sun exposure is especially important after an RF microneedling treatment because it will be particularly susceptible to sun damage.
Most patients see results within a few days of treatment, but you’ll continue noticing improvements for up to a month. We often recommend scheduling a series of 1 to 5 more treatments to enjoy the most noticeable benefits.
Can You Combine RF Microneedling With Other Treatments?
Aging skin involves a complex process that requires more than a single treatment to address. RF microneedling is an important component of our patented 5 Dimension Skin Plan™, available only at deRMA Skin institute. Even though RF microneedling is an excellent starting point for many of our patients, combining treatments—either at the same time or at separate visits—can give you the full benefit of looking your best.
We most often combine RF microneedling with CO2 laser resurfacing and dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, BELOTERO® and RADIESSE®.
Additionally, when combined with AccuTite, we can treat your skin from above and below and give you a lift that approaches 75% of what can be accomplished with a surgical facelift. Combining these treatments not only lifts and tightens facial skin but also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin—key building blocks lost with age and sun exposure. In addition, the RF energy remodels superficial pockets of fat, resulting in skin that’s firmer, more refined, and radiant.
