Acne Scarring

Acne is a common skin condition that affects as much as 90% of the population. Acne is largely a genetic condition but it is also influenced heavily by environmental triggers, hormones and stress. If left untreated, many patients with acne will develop permanent scarring.

Acne is a common inflammatory skin disorder that can leave scars that are either atrophic, hypertrophic, or keloid. Acne scars can be debilitating psychologically.

Medical Laser Treatments

Medical laser treatments in Guelph, which are paid for out-of-pocket by patients, are another option for dealing with acne scarring and redness. While these can be very effective, it is important to remember that they are not a cure, and that it might take multiple treatments with the laser in order to see improvement. While in most cases you will see excellent improvement of the redness that lasts for years, regular maintenance therapy can extend your results.

Topical Anti-Inflammatories

Your dermatologist may recommend a topical anti-inflammatory to address redness associated with acne scarring. We may recommend a topical anti-inflammatory prescription medication that can be rubbed right onto the affected area, putting the medicine directly onto the problem.

Topical Anti-Redness Medications

Prescription medications like Onreltea can be applied to your face as needed. The results are temporary and last 8-12 hours. We generally don’t recommend using more than a few times per month as it may lead to a rebound in redness.

Non-prescription topical treatments like Phytogel and Redness Solution complex can offer a milder reduction that can be applied daily without the worry of a rebound.

Avoid washing your face with soap and water.

Chemical Peels

Many patients choose to use chemical peels in their treatment efforts for acne scarring. Chemical peels are only applied to the skin every 2-4 weeks based on the severity of the scarring. The most common type of chemical peel used in acne scarring is a clinical strength Salicylic Acid. Similar to a topical form of aspirin – it is chiefly used to reduce the inflammation brought on by the acne scarring and to improve the appearance of the skin’s surface by helping to condition the skin and remove the dead layers of skin. To learn more about if a chemical peel is right for your skin type, contact our office.
