PRP Hair Restoration

For many men—and women—thinning hair can undermine self-esteem. Solutions to hair loss have been researched for decades, and among the most promising developments is the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to help regrow hair. Dr. Dusan Sajic’s expertise in PRP hair restoration at our Guelph clinic attracts patients from Kitchener, Cambridge, and areas throughout Southwestern Ontario.

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP as it’s called most often, is a substance derived from a patient’s blood that contains nourishing growth factors that stimulate the hair follicles. You may have heard of PRP used for other treatments, such as helping an athlete rebound more quickly from an injury or helping to alleviate osteoarthritis pain.

Its use for hair restoration is more recent and is proving to be quite effective, especially when combined with hair transplant surgery. Patients who choose to get PRP hair restoration—either with or without hair transplantation—experience increased follicular density and better hair pigmentation.

What Happens During A PRP Hair Restoration Treatment?

A PRP hair restoration procedure is a 3-step process that’s separate from hair transplant surgery. The steps include:

  • Drawing blood from the patient
  • Spinning the blood in a high-speed centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma
  • Injecting the concentrated PRP into the balding area

Dr. Sajic numbs the balding area with a topical application before injecting the PRP with a specialized, miniature needle.

How Long Does The PRP Procedure Take?

The process of actually injecting the PRP is quick, taking less than a minute. Drawing the blood and preparing the PRP requires about 30 minutes.

What Should I Expect After A PRP Treatment?

PRP hair restoration treatment patients typically experience some soreness and sensitivity on the scalp after treatment. There may also be minor bruising and swelling. Dr. Sajic provides patients with instructions on how to minimize these side effects.

Hair loss slows down after the initial PRP procedure and stops completely after several treatments. The structure and thickness of your hair are gradually restored, becoming thicker and thicker. New hair begins growing as hair follicles enter the growth phase. Patients seeking an even more effective method may combine PRP injections with mesotherapy, a technique involving injecting natural plant extracts, vitamins, or medicines such as finasteride and minoxidil into the scalp.

How Many PRP Treatment Sessions Are Needed?

After your initial few PRP procedures produce the desired results, we recommend returning to deRMA Skin Institute once or twice each year to maintain the outcome. Dr. Sajic customizes treatment plans for all hair restoration patients at our Guelph clinic.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From PRP?

Even though you may continue going to work or doing your normal daily routine within days of the procedure, the healing process can take 3 to 4 weeks after PRP hair restoration treatments. Do not wash your hair on the day after the PRP procedure and avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications or antihistamines for 2 weeks.

Most patients begin seeing results about 4 weeks after their treatments. The best results, however, are seen after 3 treatments performed 4 to 6 weeks apart.

How Much Does PRP Hair Restoration Cost?

The cost of PRP hair restoration depends on the personalized treatment plan created by Dr. Sajic. The extent of balding and the number of treatment sessions needed to restore your hair growth as desired will influence the final cost. This is something that Dr. Sajic discusses with each patient during their consultation.
